Translate in Translate & Adapt
Multilingual tags are translated in Shopify’s official Translate & Adapt app.
- Open Translate & Adapt (there is a link on the app’s home screen)
- Choose the language you want to translate into
- Choose “Products” and open the product
- Fill in the value for that language under Metafields > Multilingual tags
- Save
The input format matters
Section titled “The input format matters”Multilingual tags are a list metafield, so Translate & Adapt shows them like this:
["New arrival","Free shipping"]When translating, keep the square brackets [ ] and the quotes " intact and replace only the strings inside.
["Nouveauté","Livraison gratuite"]Translation is needed per product
Section titled “Translation is needed per product”Even if the same tag is applied to many products, the translation must be registered on each product. This is a constraint of how Shopify translates metafields.
The app’s translation status page shows which language is missing on which product.
Where translations show up
Section titled “Where translations show up”Once saved, translations are reflected automatically in two places:
- The app block on the product page, when viewed in that language
- Search & Discovery filter values, if the filter is configured
If the metafield doesn’t appear in Translate & Adapt
Section titled “If the metafield doesn’t appear in Translate & Adapt”The metafield definition is probably not exposed to the storefront. Check that “Multilingual tag metafield definition” shows “Done” on the app’s home screen, and press “Set up automatically” if it doesn’t. See Create the metafield definition for details.
